Like a swan serenely gliding along whilst furiously paddling below, this seemingly simple loft conversion belies the extent of design work involved. The existing staircase up to the first floor did not lend itself to being repeated above, as it would have wound up at the loft with no headroom; instead, the new 2nd flight had to tuck into what available space there was without encroaching into existing rooms, yet still achieve the requisite headroom. The existing roof structure had purlins running across the middle of the proposed dormer windows, so the roof structure had to be taken off completely and a new structure built. The conversion provides a very useful study with en suite shower, tea making area, wardrobes, and lots of shelves for CDs and books. This was the first of four improvement schemes for this property.
